The News Literacy Projectâ€™s CheckologyÂ® is a free virtual classroom with over a dozen lessons, exercises and challenges to teach students how to tell facts from falsehoods, identify bias, seek out reliable sources and understand the role of a free press in democracy.

Ideal for educators of social studies, English language arts, civics, history, media, journalism and science. Students learn to identify the traits of quality journalism, name the five freedoms protected by the First Amendment and understand the watchdog role of the press.

With more than a dozen lessons and numerous supplemental activities, Checkology is a customizable, browser-based platform that teaches students how to navigate todayâ€™s challenging information landscape â€” one in which truth, evidence and facts compete for attention with falsehoods, conspiracy theories and misinformation. Checkology is owned and operated by the nonpartisan education nonprofit News Literacy Project.

Length of Pilot: 3 Months

What will learners know and be able to do as a result of this pilot?
Students will learn how to identify credible information, seek out reliable sources, and apply critical thinking skills to separate fact-based content from falsehoods. Students will also gain the ability to identify biases and understand the role of a free press in democracy.

What training is provided to support pilot implementation?
Training and support materials are available to educators by request at checkologyinfo@newslit.org.

What is included in pilot materials?
Access to all Checkology lessons and supplemental resources, including challenges, exercises, Check Center missions, and Newsroom to Classroom visits, is included for free.
